Measure Calls for Standardized Policy Among School Districts
For Immediate Release: May 12, 1999 Juneau -- The Alaska House of Representatives Wednesday unanimously passed House Bill 192, which seeks to standardize Pledge of Allegiance policies among the state's public schools and school systems. "The goal of this bill is to require public schools to conduct regular flag exercises - which include the Pledge of Allegiance," said Representative Jeannette James (R-North Pole), sponsor of HB 192. "No one will be compelled to recite the Pledge against his or her conscience or belief system. Instead, students who object to reciting the Pledge on such grounds are simply asked to maintain a respectful silence." HB 192 would bring Alaska's flag statute in line with those of many other states. It is based on the flag statute of the State of Washington. HB 192 now moves to the Senate.
