Same Sex Court Decision Criticized by Rep. Kelly
For Immediate Release: February 27, 1997 Contact: Bruce Campbell, Aide to Representative Pete Kelly, (907) 465-2327.
Juneau -- Representative Pete Kelly said, "I have a problem with the Judges path of logic in this case. The judge said the right to a homosexual marriage is analogous to the right to wear long hair in school. Have the courts decided the institution of marriage has the cultural relevance of a teenage fashion statement?"
"Once again the Judiciary is guilty of trying to make law instead of interpreting it, and that is not their job. If they want to make law, its simple file for office and win an election," said Kelly.
"The public process has been grossly subverted," said Kelly. "The idea of homosexual marriages was discussed in 1996. Hundreds of phone calls, thousands of comments, and hours of public testimony were devoted to this subject. The people said loud and clear, We do not want homosexual marriages in Alaska. One judge could change all of this."
