Senate Joins House in Support of Continuation of Land Grants to U of A

Juneau -- The Alaska Senate Monday passed House Joint Resolution 53, which lends bipartisan support to U.S. Senate Bill 660, sponsored by Senator Frank Murkowski of Alaska. Senate Bill 660 provides for the continuation of higher education in the state through the conveyance of certain public lands in the State of Alaska to the University of Alaska.

"The unanimous, bipartisan nature of the approval vote will greatly assist the continuation of higher education in Alaska," said Representative Pete Kelly (R-Fairbanks), sponsor of HJR 53. "Supporting S. 660 helps complete the land grant to the University of Alaska," Kelly said.

HJR 53 passed the House 30-0 and the Senate 18-2. It places the Legislature on the record supporting the commitment to the University of Alaska as a land grant university.
