Bill Renaming Anchorage International Airport To Honor Senator Ted Stevens Passes the House

For Immediate Release: April 5, 2000

Juneau -- Wednesday, a bill that would rename the Anchorage International Airport the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport passed the House. The bill, SB 291, was introduced in mid-March at the request of Commonwealth North.

"As we begin the 21st Century, we can now reflect on the significant events that marked Alaska's transition from a promising frontier state to a key resource pillar of this nation," said Senator Tim Kelly (R-Anchorage). "No single person has done more to usher in these changes than Senator Ted Stevens."

Stevens has served in the United States Senate for over 31 years and ranks second in seniority among Republicans and sixth in seniority overall. He numbers among his accomplishments: stewarding the legislation creating the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act; working for Congressional approval of the Trans-Alaska pipeline; and protecting Alaska fisheries and expanding economic opportunities in the state through the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act.

"Senator Stevens recognizes the importance of the air transportation industry in a state one-fifth the size of our country," said Senate President Drue Pearce (R-Anchorage). "In that vein he has initiated by-pass mail and numerous other initiatives that have solidified Alaska's role as the air crossroads of the world. He has also increased funding threefold for the AIA, our nation's busiest cargo airport, as well as doubling airport improvement program funds for our state."

SB 291 now heads to the Governor's office.
