Vows to Stay the Course With Legislation
For Immediate Release: March 4, 1999 Juneau -- Rep. Vic Kohring (R-Wasilla/Peters Creek) expressed disappointment with the Mat-Su School Board's action last night, where a resolution was passed denouncing his school voucher legislation. The Board passed the resolution by a five to zero vote. Kohring, who has been actively promoting House Bill 5 that would grant payment vouchers to parents who wish to privately educate or home school their children, vows not to let the board's action slow his efforts. "I'm just as excited about my legislation as ever, and I won't let the board's action dampen my enthusiasm", he said. "As much as I consider their action off-base, they certainly have a right to their opinion and I respect that. But at the same time, I have many constituents who agree with me that choice in education is very important, so I intend to keep pressing forward." Kohring's bill has had three committee hearings thus far. Last week, the legislation moved out of the House Health & Social Services Committee, and yesterday afternoon, was heard for the first time in House Judiciary. "It's going to be a tough bill to get through, given the NEA (National Education Association) Union's influence on many legislators. However, I'm going to work hard to advance it as far as I possibly can", he said. |
