Bill Honors Girl Killed Crossing Parks Highway
Montana Creek Pedestrian Tunnel Would Become 'Shelby's Way'

Juneau -- A bill sponsored by District 26 Representative Vic Kohring would rename the new Montana Creek pedestrian tunnel "Shelby's Way."

House Bill 8, sponsored by Representative Vic Kohring (R-Wasilla/Peter's Creek) and co-sponsored by Representative Beverly Masek (R-Willow), seeks to honor Shelby L. Larsen, a young girl struck and killed by a car while trying to cross the existing Montana Creek Bridge.

"Largely as a result of Shelby's sad and untimely death and the efforts of her mother, Brenda Potter, friends and family, and concerned citizens, a new pedestrian tunnel near the site is being built," Kohring said. "This new tunnel will keep pedestrians and vehicles separate and will finally provide safe travel.

"Many people have been injured while crossing the Montana Creek Bridge, and Shelby, sadly, lost her life," Kohring said. "By naming the new pedestrian tunnel at the site "Shelby's Way," all Alaskans will honor those hurt or killed at this dangerous spot."
