Legislation Protects the State and Municipalities
For Immediate Release: April 22, 1999 Juneau -- The Alaska House of Representatives Thursday passed a House Judiciary Committee Substitute for House Bill 57, which would protect the State of Alaska and municipalities from some liability claims for damages in connection with the year 2000 date change. "This bill is not intended to interfere with an individual's right to receive services or entitlements mandated by statutes," said Representative Pete Kott (R-Eagle River), Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee. "But, despite the best efforts of everyone concerned, some failures might occur as State computer systems roll over to the year 2000. This measure will protect the State and municipalities both from frivolous suits and from damages resulting from problems over which the State will have no control." The Committee Substitute for House Bill 57 (JUD) passed 36-2 and now moves to the Senate.
