Realignment of Railroad Track & Seward Highway Aims to Improve Safety, Efficiency
Juneau - On Wednesday the Alaska House voted unanimously to approve Senate Bill 235, legislation authorizing the Alaska Railroad Corporation (ARRC) to enter into several land-exchange and transfer agreements needed to upgrade and realign railroad track. SB 235 also authorizes the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to modify the boundaries of Chugach State Park for the purpose of relocating and widening the Seward Highway. "I'm pleased the House has joined the Senate in approving this legislation," stated bill sponsor Senator Loren Leman (R-Anchorage). "The Alaska Railroad can now proceed with its track upgrade and realignment project, which will reduce 70 sharp curves between Anchorage and Wasilla." The unanimous support for SB 235 in the House reflects the broad community support for the authorized projects, according to Rep. Lisa Murkowski (R-Anchorage), who sponsored identical legislation (HB 362) in the House. "The track realignment project will result in an investment of $45 to $60 million into our economy," stated Rep. Murkowski. "It also provides many other benefits for the communities neighboring the rail corridor, including better access across the tracks, and the potential for future rail commuter service between Anchorage and Mat-Su." SB 235 also provides authority for DNR to work with the Department of Transportation and Public Facilities, the Alaska Railroad Corporation, and other utilities to improve the Seward Highway between Potter Station and Girdwood. The highway improvements are designed to provide increased safety from avalanche and reduce potential operational problems along one of the state's most traveled highways.
