Anchorage -- Senator Loren Leman (R-Anchorage) received the American Society of Civil Engineers 1999 Civil Government Award on Wed., Oct. 20 at the group's national conference in Charlotte, North Carolina. Senator Leman is a Professional Civil Engineer in private practice. The national award is presented to one engineer each year, in recognition of meritorious service in elected or appointed positions in government. Senator Leman received the award based on his contributions to the status of the engineering profession, and his legislative accomplishments. During his 11 years of legislative service, Senator Leman has sponsored major bills related to education, transportation improvements, resource development, telecommunications, and electric utility restructuring. He was a strong, consistent advocate for tort reform and helped secure passage of omnibus civil justice reform legislation in 1997.
