Juneau -- The Alaska Senate passed legislation Friday approving an agreement between the Department of Transportation and Public Facilities and the Inter-Island Ferry Authority. The agreement would allow the Authority to operate the state's Hollis marine terminal facility. The communities of Prince of Wales Island formed the Inter-Island Ferry Authority in 1997 to solve their ferry service needs. The Authority provides daily service between Prince of Wales Island and Ketchikan, and provides a northern link to the communities of Wrangell and Petersburg. The Authority is on track to establish a revenue sustaining transportation system that meets the areas needs for increased service. "A key to the success of the Inter-Island Ferry Authority is the use and operation of the Hollis terminal facility," said Senator Jerry Mackie, Chair of the State Labor and Commerce Committee. "Because the Authority will be the principal user of the terminal facility, DOT&PF is willing to allow them to operate it. Legislative approval is required before the state can conclude such an agreement, and by passing Senate Bill 288, we have given that approval." SB 288 moves to the House for consideration.
