Senator Jerry Mackie Joins the GOP

Alaska’s Republican Party Gains New Member

For Immediate Release: August 25, 1998 Contact: Senator Jerry Mackie at (907) 465-4925.

Craig – Senator Jerry Mackie announced Tuesday he formally switched his political party affiliation from Democrat to Republican while voting in his hometown precinct in Craig.

Calling it merely a formality, Senator Mackie said his decision today was the end-result of his announcement early last legislative session that he planned to become a Republican.

Senate President Mike Miller said Senator Jerry Mackie was a welcome addition to the Senate Republican Majority the last two years and is certainly a welcome addition to the Republican Party this year. "I have worked closely with Jerry during his eight years in the Legislature," said Miller. "Senator Mackie has done a great job for his constituents and the State of Alaska. Jerry has a promising future and we are all glad he has joined the ranks of Republican Senators."

Senators Ted Stevens and Frank Murkowski issued the following statements today:

Senator Ted Stevens:

"I am pleased to join Senator Frank Murkowski and Congressman Don Young in welcoming Jerry to the Republican Party. Here in Washington, D.C. many prominent Senators such as Phil Gramm, Richard Shelby and Ben Nighthorse Campbell have made the same decision and have become leaders in our Republican majority. We know that Jerry will have a similar experience."

Senator Frank Murkowski:

"The Republican Party is growing in Alaska because it attracts people who value family, hard work, and the responsible use of our abundant natural resources. Jerry Mackie is one of those people. I look forward to the contributions Jerry will make as a Republican legislator serving in the Alaska State Senate."
