Juneau -- The Alaska National Guard Wednesday awarded Representative Terry Martin of Anchorage its highest civilian award, the Alaska Legion of Merit. Martin, who is retiring after twenty years in the Alaska House, was cited for outstanding achievement and extraordinary leadership in public service.

Martin also led the fight to provide electronic balloting for Alaska military personnel serving overseas and worked with the University of Alaska to provide higher education benefits for military personnel.

Martin was instrumental in expanding the National Guard to include a Search and Rescue Mission and advocated for activiation of the 168th Air Refueling Wing, which created over 700 new jobs in Alaska.
