Juneau -- The Alaska House of Representatives Tuesday passed House Bill 349, sponsored by Representative Beverly Masek (R-Willow). HB 349 strengthens the protections for fishing, hunting and trapping on refuges, critical habitats and public use areas, as well as non-classified state lands. "This measure marks the beginning of our attempt to correct 'unsubstantiated biases' by offering some protections through statute and education," Masek said. "Sound scientific measures minus the emotional hysteria will ensure that the important cultural values attendant to fishing, hunting, and trapping are continued. "HB 349 respects the beliefs of those who choose not to hunt, or who are opposed to hunting," Masek said. "But it draws the line, saying it is not all right to impose those beliefs on the rest of us." HB 349 passed the House 26-10. Notice of reconsideration was filed. Attachments:
