Senate Announces Fall Schedule for Legislative Hearings
Anchorage -- Alaska Senate President Mike Miller Thursday announced the Fall lineup of Senate Legislative hearings spanning education, subsistence and the misuse of the States confidential computer system.
The Senate Finance Committee will hold their second in a series of interim hearings on Monday, September 8. The hearing will take place at the Anchorage Legislative Information Office from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. Before the next session convenes, the committee plans to develop strategies for a rewrite of the foundation formula for funding K-12 education. The committee will also review long range capital budget funding, the future of the University of Alaska system and will continue work on special departmental budget subcommittees.
To foster ongoing dialogue between legislators and University Board of Regents, an informal gathering is scheduled on September 24, starting at 11:30 am at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks (UAF) campus. The meeting is open to the public.
The Senate Resource Committee will begin hearings on Governor Knowles subsistence proposal September 24 at the UAF campus from 3:30 to 9:00 pm. Following this meeting, three weeks of statewide hearings will take place throughout the railbelt, Southeast and rural Alaska.
"Our hearing schedule for subsistence will be extremely ambitious. We will cover a lot of territory so that all Alaskans have an opportunity to voice their opinion and offer suggestions," said Miller. "It is clear there are too many subsistence proposals and too little consensus. We hope the hearings will produce a compromise solution that is fair for all Alaskans."
Other hearings will be held by the Senate Judiciary and Rules Committees. The Judiciary hearings will focus on executive branch employee misuse of the States confidential computer system. A Rules hearing will be held on September 24, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm at the UAF campus to address concerns regarding the Alaskan Railroad.
Dates, times and locations for the complete hearing schedule will be announced at a later date.
