Legislative Leaders Call for Revenue Summit

Miller And Phillips Invite Governor To Join Bi-partisan Effort

For Immediate Release: January 15, 1998

Juneau -- House Speaker Gail Phillips (R-Homer) and Senate President Mike Miller (R-North Pole) Thursday invited Governor Tony Knowles to participate in a bi-partisan Revenue Summit. Phillips and Miller personally delivered their letter of invitation to the governor this afternoon.

With the price of oil dipping to around ten dollars below what it was this time last year, Phillips and Miller called for the summit to take place in the State Capitol as soon as possible. The legislative leaders told the governor they plan to invite revenue experts from around the world and urged the governor to invite any experts or advisors he wishes.

An OPEC Minister has announced that an emergency meeting of OPEC may take place in the coming days. Due to the volatility of the oil market, Phillips and Miller called it "critical" that the potential impacts to revenue projections and and the state’s financial stability be addressed in a bi-partisan Revenue Summit.

Phillips and Miller urged the governor to join them to develop a revenue plan and state budget process based on fiscal reality and long-term success. The legislative leaders say the goal is to ensure that future generations of Alaskans will inherit a more stable, efficient, and less costly state government.
