Legislative Leaders React to Venetie Decision

For Immediate Release: Contact: Senate/House Majority Council Ted Popely, (907) 258-8187 June 23, 1997

ANCHORAGE - Senate President Mike Miller and House Speaker Gail Phillips Monday welcomed a United States Supreme Court decision to take up the Venetie case as part of its fall calendar.

"We believed all along that the merits and complicated issues involved in the case warranted a review by the Supreme Court," said House Speaker Gail Phillips. "Given the significance of this case to Alaska and the nation, we were optimistic the highest court of the land would take up this case."

"Given the large number of cases appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court, it is very significant for Alaska that the court decided to hear Venetie. We are pleased with the Court's decision to bring Alaska one step closer to receiving answers to the many questions about Indian Country," said Senate President Mike Miller. "We hope this issue will soon be put to rest for all Alaskans."
