Landmark Election for State Senate
Record Number of Republican Senators Head to Juneau

For Immediate Release: November 4, 1998 Contact: Senate President Mike Miller at (907) 258-0257.

Anchorage – History was made Tuesday evening when Alaskans overwhelmingly voted to send fifteen Republican State Senators to Juneau beating the record set in 1967 when fourteen Republican Senators served in the Fifth State Legislature. Of the ten Senate seats up for election this year, six races were taken by Republicans.

"This is truly exciting," said Senate President Mike Miller. "By electing an even larger Republican Majority to the State Senate, Alaskans are sending a clear message that we should continue our ‘Commitment to Alaska’ to reduce state spending, improve education, enhance public safety and foster a good business climate. It’s reassuring to know Alaskans agree with the representation we have been providing."

Miller said Senate Republicans would begin the process of naming leadership and committee positions for the Twenty-first Legislature on Wednesday.

"We will take the necessary time to create a Republican team that works together to produce the best results for Alaskans," Miller said.
