For Immediate Release: January 21, 2000 Juneau -- Rep. Carl Morgan, Jr. (R-Aniak) announced Friday the Denali Commission has authorized the expenditure of $ 9 million for bulk fuel and energy utility projects in rural Alaska; $500 thousand has been authorized for training initiatives. At a later date, additional funds will be earmarked for economic development and rural health care facility projects. Approximately 43% of the funds designated for design and construction of energy projects funded by the Denali Commission were identified in House District 36. "I applaud the efforts and work by the Denali Commission and the Rural Energy Group of the Alaska Energy Authority to build and strengthen the critical infrastructure of these communities," Morgan said. "I will continue to work closely with members of the commission and the Rural Energy Group of the Alaska Energy Authority to eliminate the energy deficiencies facing rural Alaska, and for new initiatives that will benefit rural Alaskans quality of life." The Denali Commission obligated $20 million in fiscal year 1999, and has now obligated another $20 million in funding for fiscal year 2000. The Denali Commission is requesting $45 million additional federal funds for fiscal year 2001 to address the pressing needs facing rural Alaska. Projects funded include:
