Juneau -- On February 18, 2000 Senate President Drue Pearce announced the availability of a scholarship for individuals entering graduate study for the first time in the fall of 2000. Four scholarships of $2,500 each will be awarded to persons pursuing an advanced degree in political science, public administration, public policy or a related field. Sprint Corporation, in coordination with the Women's Network of the National Conference of State Legislatures, will provide the scholarship funds. "There is an increasing demand for educated men and women to enhance the effectiveness and quality of state government, especially with the tough challenges facing Alaska and the rest of the nation in the new millennium," said Senator Pearce (R-Anchorage). "These scholarships will help make graduate study and a career in public service a reality for four deserving students." The scholarships will be based on a variety of factors, including scholastic achievements, written statements by the applicant, community/school involvement and letters of recommendation. Applications and supporting documentation are due no later than June 20, 2000, and are available through Sprint's office at 1-800-796-3464. "Sprint is to be commended for its sponsorship of this effort. This is a fine example of how the business community can contribute to the quality of the public sector, and I congratulate Sprint for its initiative," said Pearce. Senator Pearce is a member of the NCSL's Women's Network, which is coordinating the scholarship award with Sprint.
