Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

House Honors Fallen Civil Rights Leader

For Immediate Release: January 18, 1998

JUNEAU - In honor of Doctor Martin Luther King, Junior, there will be no session of the Alaska State House Monday, January 19, 1998.

"It is fitting that the Alaska House, like the rest of America, pause for a day to honor Doctor King," said House Speaker Gail Phillips.

"We have made great strides over the years toward Doctor King's goal of a nation in which our children are judged 'not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.' As we honor his memory this day, I hope all Alaskans will join us in reflecting on just how far we have come and how far we still have to go to achieve Doctor King's dream," Phillips said.

The House will go back into session Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock.
