Yukon/Alaska Legislators Meet in Juneau for Annual Legislative Exchange

For Immediate Release: February 16, 1998.

Juneau – Alaska State and Yukon Territorial Legislators are meeting in Juneau February 15-17 for their annual legislative exchange of ideas, concerns and interests.

While in Alaska's capital city, members of the Yukon Legislative Assembly will meet with Alaska legislators and government officials, attend committee meetings, and participate in briefings on Transportation, Environmental Assessment, Healthcare, Tourism, and other subjects of mutual interest to our jurisdictions.

Senator Randy Phillips has been a driving force in making these legislative exchanges a productive and ongoing tradition. "It is important we encourage good communication with our neighbors. These exchanges give legislators on both sides of the border a valuable forum for making decisions that better enhance our shared ties in commerce and trade," Senator Phillips said.

"Alaskans share both a long border and a long history of cooperation with the Yukon Territory," House Speaker Gail Phillips said. "We share transportation systems such as the Alaska Highway, plus we share fisheries and game resources, such as the Porcupine Caribou Herd. We also share the same problems of remoteness and challenging conditions. We get a lot from our annual meetings with our closest neighbors because we have so much in common," Speaker Phillips said.

The Alaska Legislature and the Yukon Territorial Legislative Assembly meet every year alternating locations between Juneau and Whitehorse.

Joining the Yukon Delegation is Bill Goodacre, a member of the British Columbia Legislative Assembly.
