Resolution Asks Alaska Railroad to Use Alaska Businesses
Juneau -- The Alaska House of Representatives Monday unanimously passed House Concurrent Resolution 8, sponsored by Representative Gail Phillips (R-Homer). HCR 8 encourages the Alaska Railroad to select an Alaska company for the design and construction of three rail barges, and for the charter and operation of tugboats for service between Seattle and Alaska. "By selecting an Alaska company, the Alaska Railroad Corporation can bring numerous jobs to the state at a time when our unemployment rate is increasing," Phillips said. "As a public corporation, responsible to, and owned by, the people of Alaska, we have every right to expect the Alaska Railroad Corporation to select an Alaska company when, as in this case, there are such companies which can supply the railroad's needs. "HCR 8 sends a strong message to former Governor Bill Sheffield, the President of the Alaska Railroad Corporation, and to all the members of the board, encouraging them to give this opportunity to an Alaska company," Phillips said. "We have such companies, with demonstrated histories of doing business in Alaska, and we ought to support them whenever we can." HCR 8 now moves to the Senate.
