Resolution Urges Congressional Support for Proposal
Juneau -- The Alaska House of Representatives Monday unanimously passed House Joint Resolution 14, which asks Congress to appoint an advisory committee to oversee construction of a National Museum of Women's History in Washington, DC. HJR 14 passed 39-0. "The National Museum of Women's History was created as a nonprofit bipartisan organization. So far some $10 million has been contributed to the project by private donors," said Representative Gail Phillips (R-Homer), sponsor of HJR 14. "Organizers are attempting to correct the imbalance in our history, which has tremendously understated the contributions and experiences of women. "With passage of this resolution, the Alaska Legislature will have the opportunity to lead the nation by being the first state to formally show support for this project," Phillips said. "Today's unanimous vote was the first step in that direction." HJR 14 now moves to the Senate.
