Speaker Phillips Opposes Greenpeace Blockade

For Immediate Release: August 15, 1997 Contact: Ken Freeman at (907) 258-8164

HOMER - House Speaker Gail Phillips Friday announced her support for Governor Knowles prompt and decisive action to seek a temporary restraining order against the illegal Greenpeace Blockade of a North Slope drill rig in Camden Bay.

"Greenpeace has gone way too far," said Speaker Phillips. "It is one thing to oppose a project and use the appropriate channels for making your claims. There are many legal routes from which Greenpeace has tried to stop this project - and they have failed. Now, high seas terrorism to create publicity to raise revenues and halt a legitimate project in Alaska must be stopped."

Phillips said the State of Alaska supports oil and gas development on the North Slope and will assist wherever possible to ensure this type of terrorism is not allowed in Alaska.
