House Rules Committee Forwards Sander's Issue To Full House

For Immediate Release: February 4, 1997 Contact: Rep. Brian Porter (907) 465-4930

JUNEAU -- Stressing the need for legislators to cooperate with the Ethics Committee, the House Rules Committee Tuesday recommended the following sanctions pertaining to Representative Jerry Sanders failure to cooperate in a recent Ethics charge:

• pay $1000 fine to the Legislative Affairs Agency

• banned from out of state legislative travel in 1997

• select the non-accountable option for office accounts

• attend Ethics training

• adopt and post the ethics statute in his office

"We need to send a strong message that legislators should cooperate with the Ethics Committee regarding matters brought before the committee. Today's action reflects that," Majority Leader Brian Porter, a former member of the Ethics Committee, said following Tuesday's Rules Committee hearing.

The House is expected to address the sanctions recommendation during Wednesday's Floor Session.

Porter noted that Sanders has complied with the last three sanctions already.
