House Takes Final Action On Ethics Case

JUNEAU -- Stressing the need for legislators to cooperate with the Ethics Committee, the House Tuesday carried forward with recommended sanctions by the House Rules Committee pertaining to Representative Jerry Sander's failure to cooperate in a recent Ethics charge:

Specifically on the issue of Rep. Sander's failure to cooperate with the Ethics Committee, the House agreed to the following sanctions:

• pay $1000 fine to the Legislative Affairs Agency
• banned from out of state legislative travel in 1997
• select the non-accountable option for office accounts
• attend Ethics training
• adopt and post the ethics statute in his office

"The full body of the House reaffirmed the decisions made by the House Rules Committee," said Majority Leader Brian Porter. "We need to send a strong message that legislators should cooperate with the Ethics Committee regarding matters brought before the committee."

Rep Porter said he appreciated the comments by members of the House Wednesday which helped define all the issues for the public.
