"State of the Economy" Forum Planned for February 9
Industry Experts to Provide Economic Overview

For Immediate Release: January 27, 1999

Juneau -- In an effort to gain a clearer picture of the State's overall economic outlook, Gov. Tony Knowles, Senate President Drue Pearce, and House Speaker Brian Porter will host Alaska's first "State of the Economy" forum February 9th in Juneau.

"We are pleased to work with Gov. Knowles in sponsoring this economic forum," said Senate President Drue Pearce (R-Anchorage), "The various industry forecasts - presented by industry leaders - will allow us to better understand the entire scope of Alaska's present and near-future economic status."

"The legislative leadership and I agree on the need to create a long-term, sustainable, balanced budget for Alaska," Gov. Tony Knowles said. "I believe the key to that is maintaining our commitment to jobs and a growing economy, so hearing from industry experts at this forum will help properly frame the issues as we begin the work that lies ahead."

The all-day forum at Juneau's Centennial Hall will feature presentations by private sector industry leaders and economists with expert knowledge on various areas of Alaska's economy. The forum will have four main objectives:

  • Gain a clearer picture of the state's overall economic forecast with overviews presented by the Departments of Labor, Commerce and Economic Development, and Revenue;
  • Gain a clearer economic picture of various Alaska industries by having the industries present forecast for the next 18-36 months;
  • Seek industry support in educating the public about the State's fiscal and economic situation; and
  • Alert and educate the public about the State's fiscal picture.

"It is our hope that the forum will build public understanding of the need for the Legislature and the Governor to take immediate action to develop a long-term financial solution," said House Speaker Brian Porter. "We'll get a realistic picture of the State's economy from the people who know it best," Porter said.

Alaska's first "State of the Economy" forum will be held Tuesday, February 9, 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., in Juneau's Centennial Hall. Legislators, members of the Administration, media, and members of the public are encouraged to attend.
