Ski Patrols and Nonprofits Exempted From Minimum Wage
For Immediate Release: April 23, 1999 Juneau -- The Alaska Senate Friday unanimously passed House Bill 123, sponsored by the House Labor and Commerce Committee. HB 123, which earlier passed the House unanimously, would exempt volunteer ski patrollers from minimum wage and overtime compensation requirements and clarify the law regarding exemptions for nonprofit organization volunteers. "Without the exemption in this bill, it may be illegal to use volunteers, which means there is a real danger that the activities of nonprofit volunteers and volunteer ski patrols in Alaska could be jeopardized," said Representative Norman Rokeberg (R-Anchorage), Chairman of the House Labor and Commerce Committee. "This bill would exempt potentially thousands of volunteers for nonprofits and the approximately 400 volunteer ski patrol members in Alaska from minimum wage and overtime requirements." In addition to the Alaska Division of the National Ski Patrol, this bill is supported by the 2001 Special Olympics Winter Games Alaska. House Bill 123 now returns to the House for concurrence with Senate changes. |
