Taylor Asks Knowles to Help Stop Timber Exports

For Immediate Release: February 12, 1998 Contact: Joe Ambrose, Assistant to Senator Robin Taylor, at (907) 465-4906.

Juneau -- Senator Robin L. Taylor today called on Governor Knowles to use his relationship with the Clinton administration to halt the export of timber from the Tongass National Forest.

"The Governor has been an advocate of the Tongass Land Management Plan revision and says he supports a value-added timber industry", Taylor said. "If he truly supports timber industry jobs in Southeast, he should pick up the phone and tell Bill Clinton to stop shipping those jobs out of state".

Taylor's comments come in reaction to word from Senator Frank Murkowski that the Forest Service has approved exporting 100 million board feet of timber harvested on the Tongass.

"That's 80 percent of the spruce and hemlock that's been harvested", Taylor said. "TLMP reduced our allowable cut and now they're shipping that timber out of state. No wonder we're having problems getting the veneer plant in Ketchikan and the Wrangell Sawmill on line".
