Concurrent Resolution 2 Passes Senate 15-5
For Immediate Release: February 17, 1999 Juneau -- The State Senate today approved a resolution calling on the Administration to do everything possible to implement resource management based on abundance. "This resolution sends a crystal clear message that the Legislature wants our resources biologically managed on a sustained yield basis for abundance," said Senator Robin Taylor (R-Wrangell), sponsor of Senate Concurrent Resolution 2. "The Legislature passed a similar resolution last year, however no apparent action has been taken by the Department of Fish and Game to implement any intensive management," Taylor said. "An abundance of fish and wildlife for all Alaskans is the only practical solution to the subsistence impasse. Present policies only perpetuate shortages," said Sen. Taylor. "An abundance of wildlife is what the people of Alaska need, want, and demand," Sen. Taylor said. Sen. Taylor notes that over the past few years, Alaska has seen a continuing decline in several wildlife and fish stocks in many areas of the state. "This decline has continued to the point where serious shortages currently exist and are continuing unabated," Sen. Taylor said. "If we had an abundance of wildlife and fish resources, it would go a long way toward helping solve the ongoing subsistence issue as there would be enough for all user groups," said Sen. Taylor. SCR2 requests that the Administration, fish and game managers, and policymakers do everything within their power to regulate and manage Alaska's fish and wildlife resources on a biological basis, the goal of which would be abundance within species. |
