For Immediate Release: February 18, 2000 Juneau -- Senator Robin Taylor today congratulated Governor Tony Knowles for his new stance on State Sovereignty. "The Governor has finally realized that State's Rights and an Amendment to Alaska's Constitution on Subsistence are mutually exclusive." The District A Senator made the comments following Wednesday's news conference where the Governor said he has always opposed a Native priority adding, "This country spent a hundred years doing away with laws dealing with racial determination." The Governor went on to say "the state's sovereignty over water, land and resources is not something I will barter away." Taylor concluded his comments saying, "I'm pleased that the governor has awakened to the essence of the subsistence debate. The legislature for 10 years has refused to barter away Alaska's sovereign right to manage our water, land and resources. We all look forward to working with the Governor to protect and preserve Alaska's right to manage our fish and game without Federal oversight, interference or mandate. | Top | Senator Taylor's Page | |
