Senate Expedites Subsistence Hearing Process
Judiciary Committee Sets Fairbanks Hearing on Saturday, April 25
For Immediate Release: April 22, 1998 Contact: Senator Robin Taylor at (907) 465-3873.
Juneau Recognizing that time is running short, the Senate agreed Wednesday to expedite the subsistence hearing process immediately. Members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, chaired by Senator Robin Taylor, will conduct a hearing Saturday, April 25 in Fairbanks.
The House, earlier this week, passed House Bill 406 giving a subsistence preference to hunters and fishermen with a traditional and cultural dependence on fish and game, regardless of where they live.
"Now that subsistence is in the Senate, we want to give the residents of Fairbanks, North Pole and surrounding areas a chance to tell us face to face how they feel about the issue and about this bill," said Senator Taylor. "It is our intent to let Alaskans have their say so that the federal government has a clear grasp of how the people of our state feel."
The hearing will begin at 5:00 P.M. Saturday, April 25th in the Fairbanks Legislative Information Office, 119 North Cushman Street, Suite 101.
