Judiciary Committee Seeks Alaskan Solution on Subsistence

For Immediate Release: May 1, 1998 Contact: Senator Robin Taylor at (907) 465-3873.

Juneau -- The Senate Judiciary Committee today will continue work on HB-406, the subsistence bill, during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing at 1:30 p.m. in the Beltz room on the second floor of the Capitol.

"Subsistence is a basic human right", said Senator Robin Taylor, Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. "We are seeking a common ground and a solution that will bring us together so Alaskans can finally have an opportunity to control their own destiny on this issue without a federal mandate."

Taylor observed that the constitutional amendment being pushed by Governor Knowles and the federal government would amount to federal fish and game management with a thin veneer of state control over it. "It doesn't matter if the officer who arrests you is wearing a state or federal uniform," said Taylor, "He'll be enforcing a federal law."

Taylor said more hearings on subsistence may be conducted over the weekend.
