University of Alaska Lands Bill Passes Senate
For Immediate Release: May 7, 1998 Contact: Senator Robin Taylor at (907) 465-3873.
Juneau By a margin of 14-6 the Senate passed a bill (SB 340) sponsored by Senator Robin Taylor that would allow the University of Alaska to select 250,000 acres of state land, and access an additional half million acres of land proposed for distribution to the University under a measure (S. 660) sponsored in Congress by Alaska Senator Frank Murkowski.
Taylor noted the intent of the measure is to make the University of Alaska a true land grant university. "The idea is to give the University the resources to sustain itself in the future," said Taylor.
The measure also contains a provision allowing the communities near parcels where resources are developed or extracted by the university an opportunity to match up to 20 percent of the value of the resources and obtain the funds for use by their local campuses. "This provision will encourage local communities to support their campuses," said Taylor. "Under the provisions of this bill, a community choosing to provide a match will, in effect, double the positive financial impact on their local university campus."
In many other states, the university system has a large alumni pool and population base that helps to sustain it. Alaska does not. Senator Taylor said his bill is intended to provide a stable resource based revenue source to finance operations and growth of the University of Alaska in perpetuity.
