Senate Panel to Review Domestic Violence and Child Abuse Prevention

For Immediate Release: November 19, 1997 Contact: Joe Ambrose at (907) 225-8088.

Anchorage -- The Senate Judiciary Committee will take public comment on the effectiveness of Alaska’s domestic violence laws during a hearing in Anchorage to determine whether current laws adequately protect victims. The hearing is scheduled for Thursday, November 20 at the Anchorage Legislative Office at 716 W. 4th Avenue from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Committee members want to hear from people in the front line who enforce domestic violence statutes. Representatives from law enforcement agencies, the Department of Law, state troopers and the general public have been invited to testify at the hearing.

Senator Robin Taylor, Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, noted that domestic violence and child abuse are significant problems warranting continual legislative attention.

The committee seeks to build on legislative work accomplished in the 1996 Domestic Violence Prevention Act sponsored by Senator Sean Parnell (R-Anchorage) which received strong bi-partisan support.
