Legislature Clarifies Uniform Probate Code
Bill Minimizes Tax Consequences, Simplifies Probate Procedure

For Immediate Release: April 17, 2000

Juneau -- The Alaska Senate Monday passed House Bill 275, sponsored by Representative Gene Therriault, which further refines the Uniform Probate Code to continue enhancing the estate planning climate in Alaska.

In 1996 the 20th Alaska Legislature overhauled the laws governing estates, guardianships, transfers, and trusts to adapt Alaska laws to the increasing complexity of family structure and the investment alternatives which have appeared in recent decades.

"HB 275 proposes further revisions to clarify ambiguities, simplify the probate procedure, and minimize tax consequences," Therriault said. "It is based in large part upon statutes from other states and reflects a consensus of ideas agreed upon by estate planning professionals in Alaska."

HB 275 passed both the House and the Senate unanimously.
