Soldotna -- Senator John Torgerson (R-Kasilof), Chairman of the Senate Department of Transportation (DOT) Task Force, Wednesday announced a series of Task Force meetings that will primarily focus on the Marine Highway System. The meetings will be held in Southeast Alaska communities September 16-20.
"We need to look at how we can restructure the Marine Highway System to make it more cost efficient and still provide services needed for Southeast and Southwest Alaska." said Torgerson.
The public meetings will be held in City Council Chambers in Ketchikan, Craig, Thornbay, Wrangell and Petersburg. The Task Force agenda also includes a working lunch with the Marine Highway Officials in Juneau, a tour of the Ketchikan Ship Facility, a tour of Bradford Canal and other DOT Facilities, a round table discussion with the Southeast Conference, and discussions with Marine Highway Vessel employees whenever vessel scheduling permits.
The Focus of the Task Force will be discussing and taking public comment on the future expansion of the Marine Highway System, the overall productivity and inefficiencies of the current system, the concept of feeder ferries, and any other issues regarding the Department of Transportation.
Members of the Task Force include Senator John Torgerson, Chair, Senator Bert Sharp, Senator Robin Taylor and Senator Lyman Hoffman. Senator Drue Pearce, Co-chair of Finance, will be joining the Task Force in Petersburg to attend the Southeast Conference.
