For Immediate Release: March 11, 1999 Juneau -- The Senate State Affairs Committee today took testimony on the quality of care at Alaska's Pioneer Homes. Senator Jerry Ward (R-Anchorage/Kenai), chair of the committee, said the public hearing on the State-run Pioneer Homes followed numerous complaints and questions regarding how the homes are operated and the safety of their residents. "The people in the Pioneer Homes are Alaska's heritage. These are the people that made Alaska so great," said Senator Ward. "We owe a deep debt to the people who have lived here and helped build Alaska. We owe it to our seniors and elders to ensure that they are protected and receiving the correct care at the Pioneer Homes."
