For Immediate Release: March 29, 1999 Juneau -- A former Juneau school building will soon have a new life and get a new name. The State Senate today passed a measure to rename the remodeled building behind the Capitol the Terry Miller Legislative Office Building. By unanimous vote, the Senate approved sending a Committee Substitute for Senate Bill 46, sponsored by Senator Jerry Ward (R-Anchorage/Kenai), to the House for consideration. "Lieutenant Governor Terry Miller was a fine statesman who will always be remembered," said Ward. "Miller came from a family with a long history of service to Alaska. The Miller family deserves this small honor in recognition of their contributions to the people of Alaska." Terry Miller first entered public service as a North Pole City Councilman, taking the oath of office just two days after he turned 21-the minimum age required for that office. In 1963 Miller became the youngest member of the Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly. Two years later Fairbanks voters sent him to the State House of Representatives. He served in the Senate from 1969 to 1977, and held the Senate President's gavel in 1973-74. He was elected Lieutenant Governor in 1978 and served four years. Miller died of bone cancer in 1989. He was 46.
