For Immediate Release: April 21, 1999 Juneau -- Senator Jerry Ward (R-Anchorage/Kenai) Wednesday introduced a resolution urging Congress to adopt a constitutional amendment allowing school prayer. "This resolution would restore the right to pray voluntarily in public schools," said Ward, of Senate Joint Resolution 25. "Our government has a constitutional obligation to protect religious freedom and, in light of the assault on traditional moral values, the government needs to ensure that freedom without fear of hostility to open and public prayer." Ward notes that the Senate begins each session with a prayer and that such prayers are part of many public functions. "In the Senate we begin our workday with the comfort and stimulus of voluntary group prayer. I would note that this practice has been upheld as constitutional by the Supreme Court," said Ward. "It is unreasonable to me that the opportunity for the same beneficial experience is denied to the boys and girls who attend public schools," said Ward.
