Anchorage -- The Commission on Privatization and Delivery of Government Services, established by the Legislature to examine the possibilities of turning some state functions over to private industry, has now received recommendations from 7 of its 15 subcommittees.

Among the Subcommittee recommendations are:

  • privatize Pioneer Homes and capture federal money available for the treatment of Alzheimer's Disease;
  • the Legislature should consider the apparent cost savings and other efficiencies attendant to moving legislative sessions from Juneau;
  • the Alaska Court System should disclose more information on its budget expenditures;
  • Appellate and Superior Courts should take steps to reduce their backlogs of cases;
  • modify the State accounting system to adequately monitor State purchases in amounts less than $100 thousand, which, currently, are not subject to either pre-auditing or post-auditing;
  • combine the Gaming Commission and the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board;

The full 11-member commission will accept reports from its remaining 8 subcommittees through the end of November. After hearing from interested and affected parties and receiving public input, the commission will vote on subcommittee recommendations. The commission will submit a written report to the governor and the legislature by January 1, 2000.

The complete subcommittee recommendations will be available to the public on the commission's web site, "www.privatizealaska.org." The site also has photos and contact information for commission members, along with links to resource material about privatization, meeting schedules, and news items from the Commission.
