House Gives Seniors/Disabled a Break
Bill Approves Lifetime Vehicle Registrations
For Immediate Release May 1, 1998 Contact: Rep. Bill Williams at (907) 465-4858.
Juneau -- The Alaska House of Representatives Friday approved House Bill 482, which is designed to make state government more efficient and user friendly for senior citizens and disabled Alaskans. HB 482 passed 34-3.
Current law says senior citizens and handicapped Alaskans may register one vehicle free-of-charge. HB 482 would allow seniors and handicapped drivers to register one vehicle free for their lifetime, eliminating nearly twenty thousand transactions annually.
"Currently, the state issues thousands of vehicle registrations every year to seniors and disabled citizens," said Representative Bill Williams (D-Saxman), Chairman of the House Transportation Committee, which sponsored HB 482. "While there's no charge for these registrations, considerable time and effort goes into issuing them on an annual basis. This bill removes this burden from seniors and the handicapped, helps shrink lines at DMV offices, and frees up time for employees to do other things," Williams said.
"This bill will increase the efficiency of the DMV and promote a more user-friendly atmosphere between the public and state government," Williams said.
