Surplus Salmon to Aid Balkans Urging the United States government to purchase surplus pink salmon for aid packages to the Balkans. Updated: April 29, 1999 The conflict in the Balkans between the Serbian and Albanian people has left hundreds of thousands of Albanians homeless as they flee their homeland of Kosova. The United States, together with the other member nations of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), are taking part in a massive relief effort to shelter, feed and clothe these Kosavor Albanian refugees. Among those involved in this tremendous endeavor are the International Red Cross, CARE, Catholic Relief Services, and UNICEF. Alaska has experienced record runs of pink salmon in recent years that have produced a surplus of both canned and pouched pink salmon products. In recognition that the Albanians, being a people of the Adriatic Sea, have included seafood in their diets for thousands of years, it is only fitting for the United States government to provide them with this nutritious food to help sustain them through this difficult time. This resolution urges the U.S. government to purchase surplus pink salmon for aid packages to the Balkans. |
