Alaska-US Rail System Feasibility Study Expressing support for a cooperative United States-Canada feasibility study on extending the North American rail system through British Columbia and the Yukon Territory to Alaska.
Posted: February 22, 2000 The purpose of this resolution is to lend support to Senator Frank Murkowski's effort to authorize and fund a feasibility study on connecting Alaska to the rest of North America by rail. Connecting Alaska to the rest of the North American rail system brings with it tremendous possibilities for expanding and improving the economy and transportation infrastructure of the state. A railroad connection to the lower 48 could quickly benefit Alaska's mining, agriculture, tourism, manufacturing, military and oil and gas sectors, while lowering the costs of bringing goods into the state. To realize this goal, Senator Murkowski is proposing legislation to establish a bilateral commission charged with the task of completing a feasibility study. This study would help determine the best route, identify markets and estimate construction costs. It is my belief, that by passing HJR 51, the Alaska Legislature will send a strong message in support of completing this feasibility study.
