"Legislative Update"
August 15, 2000

Meeting Notices

Dear District 18 Residents:

As it is my intention to create and facilitate more opportunities for you to be involved in your government, I am passing on some information about three public meetings that have been announced.

The first meeting is tomorrow -- Wednesday, August 16th -- at 7:00 p.m. at the Goldenview Middle School. I do apologize for the late notice, but I just received the details of the meeting today. The School District will take public comment and give a presentation on the re-zoning for the South Anchorage High School Site Plan. The plan calls for re-zoning the site from R1 (residential with limitations) to PLI (public lands and institutions). I encourage you to get involved in this project. If you cannot attend this meeting, the Huffman/O'Malley Community Council is very much involved, and they meet every third Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at the Amazing Grace Lutheran Church. I'm sure you will be welcome. You can also find out about upcoming School Board meetings at http://www.asd.k12.ak.us/School_Board/Calendar/.

The second meeting is one of a series of meetings being held by DEC's Task Force on Motorized Oil Transport, which was created by the Alaska Legislature to establish reasonable oil spill prevention and response requirements for the Alaska Railroad and certain non-tank vessels subcommittee meetings. This public meeting will be held on Wednesday, August 23rd at the Legislative Information Office from 9:00 to noon and from 2:00 to 5:00. I thought you might be interested in it, as they will be discussing spill response planning for the Alaska Railroad, and A.R.R. spills have been much in the news lately. The Task Force's website address is http://www.state.ak.us/dec/nontank/ if you would like more information.

The third meeting announcement is that the Denali Commission will hold its next quarterly meeting at the Anchorage Marriott Downtown, 820 W. 7th Avenue, on Thursday, September 14, 2000. The meeting will run from 9:00 to 5:00 p.m. There will be an opportunity for public comment. An agenda for this meeting will be available at the Denali Commission website at http://www.denali.gov/ by August 31st. The Denali Commission concept was introduced by Senator Ted Stevens and passed into federal law in 1998 for the purpose of providing an efficient tool for addressing the staggering infrastructure and utility needs in rural Alaska.

I hope you find this information useful. I will pass on other public meeting announcements as I hear about them.

Sincerely,
Con
