I am sure that you realize that the North/South runway (Runway 14/32) at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport
(ANC) will be closed beginning in early May. Thus, you may be hearing more noise than usual from ANC during the construction
season.
Constructed in 1979, the North/South runway is the Airport's main departure runway. This summer aircraft will not be able
to depart to the North on the runway. The runway's original pavement has deteriorated to a point that it now requires excavation and replacement. The closure of this runway will have a temporary noise impact on the community.
The reconstruction of the runway is scheduled to occur between May 1 and October 1 of this year. During that time, traffic
will arrive or depart over our community. The Airport has worked with the Federal Aviation Administration and the airlines to
maintain safe aircraft operations and to keep noise to a minimum. Arrivals on the East/West parallel runways impact our community
less than departures from it, so ANC is working to keep departures over the water.
There are, however, many factors that will influence ANC's ability to keep departures over the water. Items to consider
include low weather ceilings, wind direction and speed, airport/airspace capacity, visibility, and safety issues.
Residents should, however, expect that more than 95% of the aircraft operations will be over the community.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Theresa Maser, Noise Program Manager, ANC, Airport Noise
Hotline, 266-2648 or visit the reconstruction project link at www.anchorageairport.com.
Best regards,
