I was just notified by UA President Mark Hamilton of the Conference of Young Alaskans to take place in Fairbanks at the UAF campus on January 13-16, 2006. This conference is in conjunction with the University's Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Alaska's Constitution and Statehood.

The conference will draw 55 high school and postsecondary students, as well as young people involved in trades, from across Alaska to consider five outstanding challenges facing Alaska and her people. Together, the group will develop policy statements and proposed courses of action to be submitted to Alaska's political leaders.

The five key challenges the conference will focus on are:

• Providing quality education from kindergarten through university
• Developing healthy communities and families
• Creating leaders for Alaska's next generation
• Developing our natural resources responsibility
• Reviving the Alaskan dream and "Last Frontier" spirit.

Delegates to the conference will be under age 25. All nominations will be self-nominations. Nominations will be accepted online through October 28, 2005. Delegates to the conference will be announced November 14, 2005.
